Raffles Place < Back
Raffles place was originally a small hill, the soil of which was reused to reclaim the southern bank of the Singapore River forming Boat Quay. It was originally a common green, which as Singapore developed became Commercial Square. In 1858 it was renamed to Raffles Place. It has always been the commercial and financial centre of Singapore, and today is one of the worlds important banking and financial districts.
